Tuusulanbulevardi | Helsinki, Finland | summer 2018
Helsinki is preparing a new City Plan for 2050. The Plan allows for the growth of Helsinki from the current city of 625,000 inhabitants to one with some 860,000 inhabitants by 2050. The whole region is growing as the number of people in the region is expected to grow substantially from 1.3 million to two million. The key strategy to urbanize and enable this development is to urbanize the city even more. Extending the inner-city northwards, densifying new developments to emphasize a more urban structure, creating a better public rail transport and the gradually transforming the motorway-like entry routes in the outer suburbs into ’city boulevards’, thereby reducing traffic on the main streets and extending the city outwards.
As an architect intern, I joined the team working with developing the plan for one of the city boulevards. Getting to attend the different meetings, analyze the different materials and develop sketch plans for the future project I got a great opportunity to see how the city is being developed in real life. Among the others tasks I put together a small booklet exploring the possible future strategies and scenarios of developing the Finnish national road 45 into a city boulevard. This booklet contains introduction, analysis and illustrations of the new boulevard together with a list of reference project useful when creating lively and sustainable new city.
