Skogsbana | Umeå, Sweden | fall 2018
In collaboration with Kiia Nummenpalo
Skogsbana is a student competition entry to develop ideas for the future of ice skating and hockey. Our idea was to develop a strategy that could be applied to different locations and apply it in the local context of Umeå on the A3 Arena. The arena has two hockey rinks, one for the championship games of the local hockey team and one for practicing. The setting for the arena is quite typical setting for a nordic indoor ice rink. The arena is located on the suburb of the city companied by other exercising possibilities such as running track and a football field.
Have you ever been iceskating in forest? Nor have we but, it sounds exiting doesn't it? Our proposal is to create a new iceskating experience by setting an ice skating track in the forest. The proposal is utilizing the already existing infrastructure to bring the ice machine outside the arena and extend the fun to the neighbouring forest. The proposal is completed with a new façade to signal about the new activity to the general public. Skogsbana (forest track) is a new form of ice skating to attract new people to enjoy the sport as well as to offer the experienced skaters a new fresh alternative.
