Periskooppi | Norrbyskär, Sweden | Fall 2016
Norrbyskar Is a group of islets outside Umeå, located about 3 km to the Baltic Sea from the mainland. In the end of the 19th century this place was purchased by a private company and became the location for a steam-powered sawmill and a model village. The peak was in the 1920’s when the population was 1200 -1400 people living or working on the islets. In the 1930's the production slowed down and the sawmill finally closed in 1952.
Today there is only traces left of the industrial era and the islands has become a popular sight to visit in the summer to imagine how the living was back in the 20’s. Periskooppi is a periscopic observation tower to get a beautiful overview of the islets and reimagine their history. The unconventional design invites everyone to explore the tower and its surroundings.
